LAPD Cracks down on illegal parties

With nightclubs closed due to the pandemic, organizers are keeping the party going at short-term rental homes. Party houses have long been a nuisance in the Hollywood Hills area, but “the new nightclub” has many residents concerned prompting a crackdown from the LAPD.

In recent NBC4 news coverage, DSPNA President Ellen Evans says that party houses have had “a huge impact" for people who live on streets that are "normally quiet." Under the Party House Ordinance owners and party organizers both can be fined. Repeat offenders can receive a citation and criminal prosecution with up to six months in jail. City Prosecutor Ethan Weaver warns in a video from the LAPD that “those consequences don’t just apply to the person throwing the party, but they can also apply to you the home-owner. If your house has been cited for party house violations in the past, you as a property owner can be held responsible even if you are not present.”

Living next to a “new nightclub?” Here’s what you should know:

  1. Figure out where the party is. You need the address or at the very least the street the house is on and the nearby cross street.

  2. Are there fire hazards or underage drinking or is criminal activity happening? Is the road blocked? Is it after 2 am? If you answered yes, you should call 911. If you answered no, call 1-877-ASK-LAPD. You may be on hold for a long time, and response time may be also long but this is a very important step as it creates a record of the situation. With COVID response times have gone down significantly. If you think the noise might not be audible from the street you may want the responding officer to respond to your house first.

  3. Document what you are hearing and seeing. This is important information to have in the event that this house becomes a regular nuisance location.

  4. If the party is happening at a homeshare (Airbnb) please also call the Airbnb complaint line at (213) 267-7788.

  5. Email [email protected] to let us know what happened. If you have the link for a listing of the homeshare that helps as well.

  6. Parking enforcement works 24/7, so if there are parking issues please call parking enforcement at (818) 374-4823.
